A framework for reforming orbital slot allocation is urgently needed to address crowding and inequity as the space economy is expected to surpass $1.8 trillion by 2035. With significant satellite congestion and risks from space debris, proposed changes include auctioning slots and restructuring allocations to enhance efficiency, particularly benefiting emerging companies like Spire Global and Lockheed Martin. Currently, 573 of 1,800 geostationary slots are occupied, highlighting the challenges faced by developing nations under the existing first-come, first-served policy.
