On December 18, South Korea's Ministry of National Defense, led by President Lee Jae Myung, announced its 2026 business plan aimed at enhancing military capabilities. Key initiatives include the advancement of the three-axis defense system and the development of 500,000 war drones.

The three-axis system, designed to counter North Korea's threats, encompasses preemptive attack strategies, air and missile defense, and massive retaliation. The ministry's budget for this initiative is set at KRW 8.8 trillion, a 21.3% increase from the previous year, facilitating the deployment of reconnaissance satellites, Aegis destroyers, and advanced missiles.

The plan also emphasizes the expansion of unmanned forces through AI technology, including a Korea Drone Combat Competition to enhance military training. Additional reforms include restructuring intelligence agencies and discussions on transferring wartime operational control from the U.S. to South Korea.
