New Brunswick Proposes Renewable Energy and Battery Storage Over Gas Plant
Megan Mitton advocates for New Brunswick to invest in wind, solar, and battery storage instead of a gas plant. Recent projects include Canada’s largest battery storage facility in Ontario, capable of 411 MW, and a startup in Maine planning the world's largest battery for 85 MW output.
In March 2024, Saint John Energy launched a 5.8 MW battery network to store wind energy. Énergie NB acknowledges battery storage but considers it too expensive, estimating 75% higher costs than gas turbines for a 400 MW capacity. However, advancements in storage technology and declining renewable energy costs may change this.
Alternatives like decentralized batteries for homes and thermal storage devices are suggested. New Brunswick lacks hydroelectric resources but could collaborate with Quebec to optimize energy use. Currently, Énergie NB's decision favors gas, which some experts criticize as poor planning.
