Nigeria to Launch Two New Communication Satellites to Expand National Coverage
Nigeria plans to enhance national coverage by replacing its current satellite, NigComSat-1R, with two new High-Throughput Satellites (HTS). This initiative, led by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), aims to close connectivity gaps and improve digital inclusion and national security.
The new satellites will feature 77 transponders and will serve not only Nigeria but also parts of West, Central, South, and East Africa. The project, executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), is part of Nigeria's broader National Broadband Plan (2020-2025) and targets a transition to a next-generation satellite system by 2028.
A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued to attract global manufacturers for construction and launch. The global satellite industry has seen significant growth, with innovations improving connectivity and addressing the digital divide in underserved areas.
