Northern Ireland Launches Comprehensive Strategy for Peatland Conservation and Restoration
CARBON CAPTURE
Northern Ireland's Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir has announced the region's inaugural peatland strategy, which outlines a 15-year plan comprising five strategic objectives and 26 actions aimed at conserving and restoring peatlands. Covering about one-eighth of the province, these vital ecosystems are recognized for their potential to enhance carbon storage, improve biodiversity, and boost water quality. With significant funding allocated for restoration projects, Muir emphasizes the importance of peatlands in addressing climate change and supporting local wildlife.
