NW Natural Faces Challenges in Hydrogen Blending and Renewable Gas Projects Amid Partner Closures

HYDROGENNATURAL GASBIOFUELS

NW Natural's hydrogen blending and renewable natural gas projects with Tyson Foods and Modern Hydrogen are facing significant setbacks due to recent partner closures and layoffs. Tyson closed its Lexington beef plant, halting its renewable natural gas project, while Modern Hydrogen laid off nearly all of its employees in a restructuring effort.

These developments jeopardize NW Natural's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon, where natural gas companies must achieve a 26% reduction by 2035. The partnerships aimed to blend green hydrogen into NW Natural's gas supply and convert methane from Tyson's facilities into marketable natural gas. Following these disruptions, NW Natural laid off 30 employees and is reassessing its renewable gas initiatives, which are projected to supply 4% of gas to residential customers by 2026.
