Oregon State University College of Forestry Finalizes Management Plan for McDonald-Dunn Research Forest
The Oregon State University College of Forestry has finalized a management plan for the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest, effective January 2026. This updated plan, the first since 2005, aims to provide adaptive management strategies for sustainability amid climate change and marks the 100th anniversary of OSU's first acquisition of the forest land.
The McDonald-Dunn Forest spans 11,500 acres, making it the largest research forest in OSU's network. The planning process involved collaboration with various stakeholders, including state departments and community members, and received 130 public comments.
Key changes include a decrease in even-aged short rotation management while allowing for experimentation with species and practices. The forest will continue to serve as a living laboratory funded by timber revenue, prioritizing carbon storage, environmental outcomes, and recreational access for over 200,000 visitors annually. The College will host centennial activities in 2026, starting with the Starker Lecture Series in January.
