Pittsfield Plans Transition of Last Peaker Plant to Battery Energy Storage

ENERGY STORAGE

Pittsfield is seeking to convert the Pittsfield Generating Co. peaker plant into a battery energy storage facility to store renewable power. The City Council has reached out to the Office of Energy Transformation for support in this transition.

The initiative aligns with Massachusetts' goal to move away from fossil fuels and address health disparities in neighborhoods affected by the plant's pollution. The facility, which is the largest greenhouse gas emitter in Pittsfield, operates less than 15% of the time and has significantly reduced its tax contribution.

A modern battery storage system could provide necessary backup power without emissions and support local renewable energy sources. The city aims to partner with Hull Street Energy for this conversion, which could lower electricity costs and improve community health.
