Port of Long Beach Launches $10M Grant Program for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Drayage Trucks
The Port of Long Beach has introduced a $10 million Hydrogen Fuel Grant Program aimed at reducing fuel costs for fuel cell drayage trucks. Funded by California's 2022 Clean Truck Fund, the program allows operators to reimburse monthly hydrogen expenses after verifying terminal fill-ups.
This initiative supports the port's goal of achieving a zero-emission drayage fleet by 2035, aligning with California Air Resources Board targets. The program encourages fleets to register with the Clean Truck Program and operate CARB-certified fuel cell models, with up to 80% reimbursement of hydrogen costs.
If fully utilized, the grant could eliminate approximately 3.7 million diesel miles annually, significantly reducing harmful emissions. The port plans to adapt funding levels based on market trends, ensuring stable support for operators. This move positions Long Beach as a leader in hydrogen infrastructure, potentially influencing other ports to adopt similar initiatives.
