Punjab Engineering College Students Develop Low-Cost Rocket for 2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition
A team of 15 students from Punjab Engineering College (PEC) has developed a low-cost rocket capable of reaching altitudes of three kilometers for the 2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) in the United States. The rocket, built in four months, successfully reached 500 meters during initial testing in New Chandigarh and features a parachute for safe landing.
Constructed using advanced technology, the rocket employs a solid rocket motor with 95% performance accuracy compared to commercial models. The team is also developing a new lightweight carbon-fiber rocket, expected to be completed in three months, with a Preliminary Design Review to be submitted by December 15. The project has enhanced PEC's international reputation, securing a top 5 position at the Spaceport America Cup 2026 and demonstrating India's engineering capabilities.
