Raw Sewage Contaminates Cofimvaba River Due to Malfunctioning Treatment Plant
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATIONFLOW CONTROL
The Cofimvaba River in the Eastern Cape is contaminated with raw sewage from a malfunctioning wastewater treatment plant, affecting local communities. Residents are using the polluted water for cooking and laundry.
The Chris Hani District Municipality is aware of the issue but has not effectively addressed it despite appointing a contractor for refurbishments three years ago. Only one aerator is functioning, and plans for comprehensive assessments and upgrades are underway.
