Rising Electricity Costs in the US Prompt Shift Towards Distributed Energy Resources
Distributed energy resources (DERs), including residential energy storage systems and solar panels, are increasingly seen as solutions to rising electricity costs in the U.S. Palmetto's 2025 Impact Report highlights Californians saved $27.8 million through its solar installations, which are expected to generate 704 GWh.
Duke Energy's proposed $1 billion annual revenue increase, effective January 2027, exemplifies the trend of utility rate hikes, with typical bills rising by $17.22 monthly. The Colorado PUC is pushing utilities like Xcel Energy for better data on infrastructure and has approved a flexible tariff to aid clean energy projects.
Additionally, the California CPUC has launched programs to support low-income residents in adopting battery storage and solar systems. Partnerships like that of the Colville Tribes and OATI aim to enhance energy resilience through microgrids. However, inconsistencies in interconnection processes among utilities hinder DER deployment.
