Roanoke City Public Schools Secures $450K Grant for Virginia's First K-12 Solar-Powered Microgrid

Roanoke City Public Schools has received a $450,000 grant from Virginia's Department of Emergency Management to construct a solar-powered microgrid at Patrick Henry and William Fleming High Schools. The project, developed by Secure Solar Futures, will enhance emergency shelter capacity and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. With a total investment of $2.55 million, the microgrid will generate 2 megawatts of solar power and provide 8 megawatt-hours of battery storage, aiming to save the schools $60.2 million over 35 years.
