RWTH Aachen Expands M5Bat with Sodium-Ion Storage in Collaboration with Uniper SE

ENERGY STORAGE

RWTH Aachen is expanding its M5Bat research battery storage system in collaboration with Uniper SE, adding a sodium-ion storage unit with a capacity of 1.5 megawatt-hours (MWh). This project, which includes Germany's largest operational sodium-ion battery, aims to explore alternatives to lithium-ion technology while integrating a semi-solid-state LFP cell battery cabinet. Commissioning is scheduled for spring 2026, as Uniper utilizes M5Bat for a multi-market strategy to assess new cell chemistries.
