Scatec to Develop 1.7 GW Hybrid Solar and Battery Storage Project in Egypt

ENERGY STORAGE

Scatec has received approval from the Egyptian cabinet to develop a hybrid solar and battery storage project with a total capacity of 1.7 GW. This project will produce 100 MW of power continuously and includes a battery system with a storage capacity of 1.5 GWh.

It also involves constructing a 500-kV transmission line and a 600-MVA transformer station for national grid connectivity. Additional battery storage facilities will be established in Abu Qir (1,435 MWh) and Nagaa Hammadi (1,000 MWh), each linked to the grid via new substations.

The project aims to enhance Egypt's power system, achieving a total battery storage capacity of around 4 GW to improve grid stability. The cabinet approved the power purchase agreement and land usufruct agreement for the project. Moreover, Scatec signed shareholder agreements for the Obelisk hybrid project near Luxor, which will feature a 1.1 GW solar plant and a 100 MW/200 MWh battery system, slated for completion in 2026.
