ScotRail plans to launch a new multi-billion-pound train fleet starting in mid-2027, replacing most of its current trains with refurbished diesel models and 70 new electric and battery-powered trains by 2031. Despite anticipating challenges based on previous fleet introductions, the initiative aims to enhance accessibility and reliability, while older trains will continue to operate on certain rural routes. Managing director Joanne Maguire highlighted the urgency of the project as the existing fleet approaches the end of its lifespan.
