Shetland Islands Council Sees Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decline, Misses 2024-25 Target

HYDROGENCARBON CAPTURE

The Shetland Islands Council reported a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2,836 tonnes, equating to an 11% decrease from its 2019-20 baseline. However, it narrowly missed its 2024-25 emissions reduction target of 11.7%.

Land data, including degraded peatland, was included for the first time, accounting for nearly half of emissions. Although significant reductions were achieved primarily through the sale of land, concerns were raised about the implications of these sales. The council aims to align with Scotland’s net-zero target by 2045, emphasizing the need for increased investment in climate action.
