World Wetlands Day 2026 will feature a workshop and field excursion on peatland management in South Africa. The event aims to enhance awareness and capacity for detecting and managing peat fires, which pose risks to water security and biodiversity.
The Water Research Commission and Agricultural Research Council are collaborating on this initiative, emphasizing the importance of wetlands for livelihoods and ecosystem services. A decision tree management tool will be introduced, with guidelines expected by November 2026.
