South Africa's Renewable Energy Sector Sees Major Investments and Infrastructure Developments
ENERGY STORAGE
The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) has attracted over R300 billion in investments, significantly increasing power capacity in South Africa. Solar PV installations have risen by 52% to 3.2GW as of Q1 2023.
However, the country requires R440 billion to build 14,000km of transmission infrastructure. The National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) was established in June 2024 to address these challenges, along with a Credit Guarantee Vehicle to assure investors. Additional projects include a R12.8 billion Battery Energy Storage program and manufacturing initiatives from companies like Polarium.
