Spain's DGSF Plans to Electrify Rail Network and Eliminate Diesel Traction
HYDROGEN
Spain's Directorate-General for the Railway Sector plans to electrify its national railway network and eliminate diesel traction by 2050 as part of its new Indicative Strategy. Currently, 57.5% of the 11,672 km network is electrified, and a public consultation is underway to explore alternatives such as battery and hydrogen-powered trains, with feedback due by October 2025. A hydrogen-based bi-mode prototype train has already been tested on select lines as part of the European FCH2RAIL project.
