SSE Approves £50m Battery Storage Project in Co Tyrone with 100MW Capacity
SSE has finalized its investment decision for a 100MW battery storage facility near Dungannon, known as the Derrymeen BESS. The facility will provide two hours of storage, equating to 200MW, and will connect to the Tamnamore substation, contributing to the all-island Single Electricity Market.
The project aims to enhance Northern Ireland's electricity network by balancing the grid and supporting renewable generation. Preliminary work has commenced, with construction expected to begin in late 2026.
Grid connection will involve collaboration with the System Operator for Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Electricity Networks. The project is projected to create up to 30 full-time jobs during peak delivery and engage local contractors and suppliers.
