Stockholm Exergi to Build $1.2 Billion BECCS Facility in Värtan Port, Aiming to Capture 800,000 Tons of CO₂ Annually

BIOPOWERBIOFUELSCARBON CAPTURE

Stockholm Exergi is constructing one of the world's first industrial-scale BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) facilities at Värtan Port in Stockholm. The facility aims to capture and permanently store up to 800,000 tons of biogenic CO₂ per year, exceeding the total emissions from Stockholm's traffic.

The investment decision for the full-scale plant was made in March 2025, with an estimated cost of 13 billion Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 billion euros), and operations are expected to commence in 2028. The project won a BECCS competition organized by the Swedish Energy Agency in August 2024, securing 20 billion kronor (about 1.8 billion euros) in public funding, disbursed over 15 years. Microsoft has also entered into a long-term agreement to purchase the permanently removed CO₂.
