A study by researchers from Lappeenranta University of Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and University of Alcalá predicts that sodium-ion batteries will become cheaper than lithium-ion batteries by 2050, with costs dropping significantly due to reduced reliance on expensive materials. By 2035, sodium-ion battery cell prices are expected to reach €78.9/kWh, compared to €92.9 in 2023, while lithium iron phosphate prices will also decline. Overall, the capital expenditure for batteries is projected to fall to €30-50/kWh by 2050, down from €116 in 2023.
