Taiwan's Nuclear Safety Commission Initiates Project for Small Modular Reactor Development
NUCLEAR
The Nuclear Safety Commission of Taiwan is set to launch a four-year initiative aimed at developing Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Micro Modular Reactor technologies. This follows a recent referendum on the Maanshan nuclear power plant, which, despite failing to meet approval thresholds, showed strong local support.
The commission plans to initially invest NT$100 million to establish the capacity for reviewing SMR applications and will later allocate NT$800 million for the broader project. Additionally, efforts will be made to train researchers abroad to enhance domestic nuclear expertise.
