Tamil Nadu Forest Department to Establish Biochar Facility in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve

CARBON CAPTURE

The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is establishing a biochar manufacturing facility in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, with an investment of ₹8.50 crore, to combat invasive plant species and generate revenue. Local tribal groups and rural communities will participate in harvesting these plants, which will be converted into biochar using pyrolysis technology, processing 7,000 to 10,000 tonnes of biomass annually. The initiative aims to enhance soil fertility, promote carbon sequestration, and tap into carbon credit markets for financial benefits.
