UK Cement and Concrete Industry Achieves Significant Emission Reductions but Faces Investment Challenges
HYDROGENCARBON CAPTURE
The Mineral Products Association (MPA) reveals a 63% reduction in emissions from the UK's cement and concrete manufacturing since 1990. However, barriers such as high electricity prices and post-Brexit export challenges hinder further investment.
MPA's executive director advocates for supportive policies, including a carbon border adjustment mechanism, to encourage domestic production of lower-carbon products. The MPA's updated roadmap aims for a net-negative industry by 2050, utilizing carbon capture and storage and innovative concrete applications. The government has pledged substantial funding for carbon capture and low-carbon hydrogen.
