UK gas industry and labor representatives have cautioned the government against narrowing the role of hydrogen in its updated hydrogen strategy. In a letter to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, leaders from Future Energy Networks, the GMB union, the Hydrogen Energy Association, and the Green Gas Taskforce emphasized that reduced ambitions could harm investment, jobs, and competitiveness.

They warned that limiting hydrogen usage and production pathways could deter private capital, pushing investments abroad. The letter highlighted the UK’s decline from second to eighth place in the Global Hydrogen Potential Index since 2021 and cautioned that further uncertainty could result in the loss of tens of billions of pounds in potential investment.
