UK Government Focuses on AI, National ID Card, and Cyber Security in Public Sector Digital Initiatives
In 2025, the UK Government has prioritized three key issues in public sector digital initiatives: artificial intelligence (AI), a national ID card, and cyber security. The government, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, is promoting AI to enhance productivity across central government, despite public skepticism about its effectiveness.
The proposed national ID card aims to control immigration and improve access to public services, but faces significant public opposition due to concerns over civil liberties. Cyber security discussions have intensified, as public sector entities are frequent targets for cyber attacks, highlighting the need for enhanced defenses and resilience, including through the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Furthermore, the government has launched GDS Local to assist local authorities in developing digital services and is beginning to explore quantum computing applications, having allocated £14 million for related projects.
