UK's Path to Clean Fuels for Aviation and Shipping by 2050: Investment and Policy Reforms Needed

HYDROGENCARBON CAPTURE

A new report from the Net Zero Technology Centre highlights that the UK could satisfy the future demand for clean fuels in aviation and shipping by 2050. However, this ambition hinges on significant investments and policy reforms to tackle infrastructure and cost challenges.

The analysis indicates that over 5.3 million tonnes of captured carbon dioxide and 1.36 million tonnes of hydrogen will be required annually. Currently, the UK has only committed to 3.45 gigawatts of hydrogen production capacity, falling short of its 2030 target, while clean fuels remain significantly more expensive than fossil fuels.
