University of Bremen Leads Discovery of New Hydrogen Source at Jøtul Hydrothermal Field, Norway
HYDROGEN
An international team led by the University of Bremen has discovered a new hydrogen generation process at the Jøtul Hydrothermal Field in Norway, where organic materials decompose under supercritical conditions, releasing hydrogen. This finding, published in Communications Earth & Environment, highlights the potential significance of fluid and sediment interactions as a source of dissolved hydrogen in the ocean. Further research is planned under the Cluster of Excellence 'The Ocean Floor - Earth's Uncharted Interface', with expeditions set for 2026.
