The US Space Force is developing a new constellation of 'free flyer' surveillance satellites designed to autonomously detect and monitor Resident Space Objects in geosynchronous orbit. This initiative follows industry input received in early 2026 and aims to enhance space situational awareness by utilizing small SVs, similar to mini or nanosatellites, which will be deployed from larger host satellites. The satellites will integrate with existing command-and-control systems to meet operational requirements.
