German Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel (PKV) has secured public funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Lower Saxony to transition to carbon-neutral production. The company plans to invest several hundred million euros by spring 2025 to reduce emissions, implementing large-scale industrial heat pumps and thermal energy storage systems, with initial installations projected for 2029. PKV's Varel mill, which focuses on recycled materials, operates four paper and board machines with a capacity of approximately 930,000 tons per year.
