WavEC Calls for Acceleration of Portugal's Offshore Wind Industry Development
WavEC Offshore Renewables has urged urgent action to advance Portugal's offshore wind sector, emphasizing the need for aligned policy direction, financial certainty, and industrial readiness. This call follows the WavEC 2025 Annual Seminar held in Lisbon, which gathered stakeholders from Portugal, Brazil, and the EU.
WavEC CEO Marco Alves highlighted the risk of Portugal falling behind in offshore wind development without immediate investments in regulatory clarity, port infrastructure, and supply-chain capabilities. The seminar underscored the importance of a strategic partnership between Portugal and Brazil, focusing on R&D cooperation and the establishment of offshore wind corridors.
Discussions included the necessity for stable regulatory frameworks and public-private financing to support floating wind investments. Portugal has an offshore wind potential of 25-30 GW, with key preparatory steps already taken, including the Offshore Renewable Energy Zoning Plan and a target of 2 GW by 2030 as part of its decarbonization strategy.
