Weser-Ems-Bus Launches Hydrogen Bus Fleet in Friesland, Germany with Caetano Vehicles
DB Regio subsidiary Weser-Ems-Bus has deployed a hydrogen bus fleet in Friesland, featuring six Caetano vehicles. This initiative supports Deutsche Bahn's strategy to enhance zero-emission operations across its bus networks.
Initially, the buses will refuel at a mobile hydrogen station at the Jever depot, developed with the Technology Transfer Centre Bremerhaven and hydrogen producer Lhyfe. A permanent public station is planned for 2026 in Schortens.
The introduction of fuel cell buses is part of a broader transition, with plans for two battery-electric buses to follow, increasing emission-free vehicles to approximately ten percent in Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein. The project is backed by €16.5 million from the Federal Ministry of Transport and €450,000 from the district of Friesland. The buses feature Toyota fuel cell systems, a range of up to 590 kilometers, and various passenger amenities.
