WorldFish Launches BIMTA Pilot Project for Sustainable Mariculture in Nigeria
WorldFish Nigeria has initiated a pilot Brackish-water Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (BIMTA) project as part of the Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway (AABS) initiative, aimed at enhancing sustainable mariculture in Nigeria. The project seeks to boost local fish production, reduce Nigeria's over US$1 billion annual fish import bill, and create jobs, particularly for women and youth.
The pilot was launched in Ogun State and Lagos State. Funded by UK International Development's Blue Planet Fund, the AABS initiative targets over 700,000 beneficiaries across Nigeria, Kenya, and Bangladesh, focusing on ecosystem restoration and livelihood improvement.
The BIMTA model integrates finfish, shellfish, and aquatic plants, promoting climate-smart practices and potential carbon credits. Local stakeholders expressed support for the project, which aims to establish a scalable aquaculture model and enhance community engagement.
