Zambia Begins 100 MW Siavonga Solar PV Project to Enhance Energy Security

HYDRO POWERSOLAR ENERGY

Zambia has launched the US$80 million Siavonga 100 MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project to strengthen energy security and attract renewable energy investment. The project aims to diversify the national energy mix and enhance resilience to climate variability while ensuring reliable electricity supply.

Solar energy is prioritized due to hydrological challenges affecting hydropower generation. The project, developed by JIGSCO Energy Corporation Limited, a joint venture of ZESCO Limited and Jigsaw Investments, with Power China as the EPC contractor, is expected to be operational by December 2026. It aligns with Zambia's Integrated Resource Plan and the National Energy Policy of 2019, aiming to end load shedding and deliver socio-economic benefits, including job creation and local economic activity.
