Zero Emission Industries (ZEI), a California-based designer of hydrogen fuel cell power systems, has announced its closure after seven years due to shifting market conditions and capital constraints. Known for developing the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell passenger ferry, ZEI faced challenges such as high capital costs and uncertain demand signals, reflecting broader issues in the hydrogen sector. Despite significant advancements and a notable funding round led by Chevron New Energies in 2021, the company concluded that it could no longer sustain operations.
