The AKPS will begin recruiting 220 armed forces veterans in stages starting January 2026, as part of an initiative under Budget 2026. Most applicants are veterans from special units such as the Special Service Group, Naval Special Forces, Air Force Special Forces, and airborne units.

Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari stated that the Veterans Affairs Department coordinates the list of eligible veterans for interviews. The recruitment process will focus on support roles through contract appointments, following a model used by the Wildlife and National Parks Department. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh officiated the recruitment ceremony.
