AMEA Power Commissions Tunisia's Largest Solar Plant in Kairouan

NATURAL GASSOLAR ENERGY

AMEA Power announced the commercial commissioning of a 120-MWp solar photovoltaic plant in Kairouan governorate, Tunisia, on December 16. This facility is the largest solar park in Tunisia and the first to exceed 100 MWp.

It connects to Tunisia's electricity and gas utility STEG via a 225-kV high-voltage line, generating approximately 222 GWh annually, enough to power about 43,000 households. The plant will reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 117,000 tonnes per year.

Financing was provided by the International Finance Corporation and the African Development Bank. Tunisia aims to increase the share of solar and wind in its energy mix to 35% by 2030 to reduce dependence on natural gas, which accounted for 95% of electricity generation in 2023. The project reflects the government's reliance on private investments to enhance renewable energy capacity.
