Trinity Metro to Purchase 15 Compressed Natural Gas Buses in $12M Upgrade

NATURAL GAS

Trinity Metro is investing over $12 million to purchase 15 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from Gillig LLC, following board approval. The contract includes a $1.2 million contingency for unexpected costs.

This initiative aims to diversify the aging fleet and enhance environmental sustainability. The new CNG buses are expected to reduce air pollutants and align with Trinity Metro's maintenance and service goals.

For 2025, the agency reported over 8 million trips, a 2% increase from 2024, though slightly below its goal of 8.4 million. Notable ridership increases were observed on the Orange Line, which grew by 22.3%, and the Blue Line, which increased by 23.5% compared to last year. In September, some Blue Line electric buses were replaced with gas-powered models due to a recall from New Flyer Inc. concerning overheating battery circuits.
