Army Delays Departure from Beachley Barracks, Impacting Housing Plans in Gloucestershire

DEFENSE

The Army's departure from Beachley Barracks in Gloucestershire has been delayed from 2029 to 2031, affecting the Forest of Dean District Council's housing strategy. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) cited the need for a significant investment decision regarding future Armed Forces needs.

The barracks site is earmarked for up to 600 new homes as part of the council's expanded plan to meet government targets of 12,000 homes over 20 years. Without a housing allocation plan, developers may build without required infrastructure.

The MOD acknowledged the uncertainty caused by the delay and committed to updating the council. Despite concerns raised by local officials about sustainability, the council stated that the Local Plan is valid until 2045, suggesting no expected long-term impact from the delay.
