Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' has become the first airport in Europe to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint, completing its Route 2025 program 25 years ahead of the European target for 2050. Initiated in 2019, Route 2025 included a €70 million investment plan, with €44 million from the RRF and NextGenerationEU.

Key components include comprehensive electrification, energy self-sufficiency through two solar parks producing 88,000 MWh annually, and the elimination of natural gas usage. The project aims to establish energy autonomy and enhance Greece's position in sustainable aviation. Political and industry leaders emphasized the importance of this initiative for growth, competitiveness, and green infrastructure in transportation.
