Australia Considers Japan's Type-12 SSM-ER for Maritime Defence Enhancement

DEFENSE

Australia is exploring the acquisition of Japan's Upgraded Type-12 SSM, also known as Type-12 SSM-ER, as part of its maritime defense strategy. Japan plans to introduce this advanced ground-launched anti-ship missile before April 2026.

Estimated at around US$3 million per unit, it is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to US missiles like Lockheed Martin's PrSM Increment 1, priced at approximately US$2.1 million. The Type-12 SSM-ER offers a range of over 1,000 km, surpassing its competitors.

The system's price transparency remains limited due to Japan's regulations on lethal weapon exports. Japan's missile procurement costs for the Type-12 SSM-ER may align with comparable systems, with an estimated total battery cost of around ¥25 billion (US$180 million) for 32 missiles and associated ground equipment, potentially enhancing Japan-Australia defense cooperation.
