Bangladesh Plans Increased LNG Imports Amid Falling Global Prices

NATURAL GAS

Bangladesh aims to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports due to declining global prices and rising domestic demand. For the fiscal year 2025-26, the government initially planned to import 115 LNG cargoes, up from 94 last year, but is now considering further increases as international prices remain low.

The authorities approved a purchase of a spot cargo at $9.99 per mmBtu. In 2022, LNG averaged $18.43 per mmBtu, dropping to $12.84 in 2024. Domestic gas production is approximately 2.08 billion cubic feet per day, below the 2012 average.

Under long-term agreements, Bangladesh will buy 40 cargoes from Qatar and 16 from Oman in FY26, with additional supplies from the spot market. Current regasification capacity is limited to 1,100 million cubic feet per day through two floating terminals, with two land-based terminals under development.
