Brechin Castle Project in Trinidad Delivers 92 MW Solar Power, Advancing Caribbean Clean Energy Goals
The Brechin Castle Solar Project began supplying electricity to the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) grid in July 2025, becoming the Caribbean's largest utility-scale solar installation with a capacity of 92 MW. This joint venture between bp, Shell, and the National Gas Company (NGC) occupies 186 hectares near Couva and is expected to meet approximately 8% of Trinidad's electricity demand.
The project highlights a shift from a thermal generation-dominated energy landscape to utility-scale renewables, leveraging private investment and government support. The consortium structure allows the government to facilitate the project without direct equity involvement, creating a model for other Caribbean nations to attract international capital for renewable energy initiatives. Caribbean Energy Week (CEW) in March 2026 will showcase regional energy discussions, further promoting collaboration in clean energy efforts.
