Cambodia's Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary Faces Threats from Mining and Hydropower Projects

HYDRO POWER

The Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary in northeast Cambodia is under threat from mining activities and a proposed hydropower dam. Since 2020, parts of the Veal Kambor Community Protected Area have been allocated to extractive companies without proper compensation to local farmers.

Over the past 15 years, significant deforestation has occurred within the sanctuary, impacting both wildlife and local communities. A proposed 376-megawatt hydropower dam would further threaten the sanctuary's core zone and displace families, while ongoing logging and mining activities continue to erode conservation efforts.
