Canada Launches 12 Satellites in 2025, Mainly Through SpaceX Missions
In 2025, Canada launched a total of 12 satellites, the second highest in its history, following 23 in 2023. This is modest compared to the over 4000 satellites launched globally, primarily by SpaceX, which alone accounted for 3202 satellites, including 3113 Starlinks and 89 Starshield satellites.
The Defence Research and Development Canada, part of the Department of National Defence, launched three small satellites under Project Grey Jay in January via SpaceX's Transporter-12 mission, aimed at Arctic surveillance. Wyvern deployed two Earth observation payloads on SpaceX Transporter missions in March and a few weeks ago.
GHGSat launched four methane monitoring satellites in two batches in June and November, also via SpaceX. Other organizations, including EarthDaily, Galaxia Mission Control Systems, and Mission Control, each launched one satellite through SpaceX. Some planned launches did not occur, such as those by Kepler Communications and the University of Toronto Aerospace Team.
