Captain Alfred S. McLaren, a U.S. submarine veteran known for leading the nuclear submarine Queenfish on a pivotal Arctic mission in 1970, passed away at 93 due to surgery complications. Over his 26-year Navy career, he participated in 20 submarine missions, earning the Distinguished Service Medal, and later became an expert in climate change and polar geography. McLaren also made significant contributions to maritime archaeology and served as president of the Explorers Club from 1996 to 2000.
