CIA Awards $600 Million AWS Contract for Cloud Services Amid Intelligence Partnerships

DEFENSE

In 2013, the CIA awarded Amazon a $600 million contract to outsource its classified data to Amazon Web Services (AWS), which became fully controlled by the U.S. Intelligence Community, including the CIA and NSA.

This partnership has expanded, with the CIA awarding AWS a multibillion-dollar contract for 'C2E' in 2020. In April 2021, Israel signed a $1.2 billion cloud services contract with AWS and Google Cloud Platform for government services.

By 2022, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded cloud contracts worth $9 billion to AWS and other tech companies. AWS has also secured a $10 billion cloud contract from the NSA, emphasizing its role in hosting classified data.

Meanwhile, critics have raised concerns about AWS's environmental impact and the storage of sensitive patient information through its services. Recent protests in Helsingborg highlight grassroots opposition to Amazon's practices and impacts on local communities.
