The City of Vernon allocated nearly $50,000 in discretionary grants to six organizations during the council meeting. The Salvation Army received the largest grant of $20,300 for equipment and furnishings for a new food bank.

Other recipients included Abbeyfield Houses of Vernon Society ($8,000), North Okanagan Hospice Society ($6,000), North Valley Gymnastics Society ($5,000), and Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society ($2,500). Twelve organizations had their funding requests denied, totaling over $100,000 in asks.

The discretionary grants program, which has a budget of $100,000 for 2025, issues funds bi-annually, with deadlines on April 30 and October 31. The council's decisions aim to enhance the quality of life for residents through community-based projects.
